Where to get Masala Dosa in Singapore Hidden Travel Gems

Seen that? - Where to get Masala Dosa in Singapore
The day after I arrived in Singapore, I bought a two-day pass on the Hippo double decker bus. Hopping on and off the bus is the best way to get an overall view of the entire city. Okay, so it's touristy, but most DIY travelers do it, anyway. Tourists flock to the ethnic enclave of Little India; this district boasts wall-to-wall colorful shop houses. Built in the 1920s, the restored shop [...] Read More

Secret Islands: South Water Caye, Belize

Whether you think of Gilligan and Mary Ann or about Robison Crusoe, everybody loves a deserted (or nearly deserted) island. Maybe it's the privacy. Maybe seclusion pays off in something more like communion with nature, with the sea. Maybe it's just that the absence of distractions and irritations, so that nothing keeps you from fully enjoying the sensual experience of sand in your toes and a beer in your hand.

South Water Caye in Belize is just one of a number of secret (as in undiscovered by the tourism industry) islands around the world. From the south end of the island you can snorkel the Western Hemisphere's oldest barrier reefs.

A cottage on the beach provides the stereotypical desert island experience. In the words of Travel & Leisure, entertainment here is "of your own making..."

Yangtze River Cruise. Why Not?

I've always wanted to go to China. I wanna see The Forbidden City and the Great Wall. I have this long standing invitation to visit the country from a Chinese friend residing in Beijing.

The Yangtze river is also one of China's main tourist attraction. The Yangtze River, or Chang Jiang (which literally means The Long River) is the longest river in China and Asia, and the third-longest in the world. It practically divides North and South China.

Going on a cruise is I suppose truly relaxing while you soak in the sun, the wind and the awesome scenery. It's a great activity whether you go at it alone, with your family or your friends. Either way, it's still a lot of fun. It doesn't have to be expensive as most cruise ships offer discounts whole year round.

I may have to take my friend's offer sometime soon and maybe go on a Yangtze River cruise too. We'll see...

Southern California Family Vacations

Filed in archive Did you know , Hidden Gems on April 14, 2010

I'm a little old these days for surfing. But a Southern California family vacations would be nice.

It's early spring where I live. That means the mercury sometimes breaks 70F (21C) during the week and drops into the low 40's (6C or 7C) most nights. We still have a few good hard frosts left...

What I'd like is a few days (or maybe a week) on a nice beach in Southern California. Hamburgers, tanning oil, a couple of moonlit walks on the beach. The kids can look for shells at low tide and I can watch the surfer dudes walking the nose of their board when they catch good waves.

I suppose I'm going to have to go looking for tickets. I can fly into LAX and we can rent a car.

Of course, Southern Cal has more than nice beaches. There's Hollywood, Disneyland, and a few nice parks around the area as well. The grandkids will like it.
