Visiting Guam

Filed in archive Videos on December 7, 2007

Guam, a small island in Micronesia, actually belongs to United States. What an ideal destination for travelers from the U.S. They can experience the Western South Pacific without having to officially leave the country. So why do so few people travel there?

Airfare, for one. guam is actually closer to Asia than Hawaii is. Airfare is not cheap. The island is not as developed as destinations like Tahiti or Hawaii. Because of its proximity to Asia, a majority of foreign visitors in Guam are from Japan, Korea, or Taiwan.

What are the attractions in Guam? Well, First, of course, you'd have to list diving in the perfectly transparent waters of the South Pacific. Watching a tropical sunset framed by the stereotypical beach, water, and palm trees.

Eco-tourism is gaining popularity, especially since there are large swaths of untouched and lush forest in Guam's interior lands. The vibrant culture of the Chamorro people, native to Guam, is found in the unique cuisine, traditional festivities, and laid-back atmosphere of Guam. Though much of this traditional culture has disappeared, there are still places to find tasty local cuisine and hand-made crafts and textiles that are unique to the island.
