Trekking Among the Clouds in Nepal

For all those fit enough (and crazy enough) to attempt to summit Mount Everest, there are 50 times as many travelers who would just as soon experience Everest from afar.
The Everest region of Nepal, known as Khumbu, is one of the most popular places for trekking. Sure, one wants to see the world's largest mountains up close, but what about the scenic valleys, rushing rivers, and the colorful culture of the regions people. The locals, the Sherpa and Rai people, are known for being friendly and honest.
It is possible to make a ten day journey from Lukla, Khumba's only air strip, to Everest base. There is plenty to see along the way.
There are a number of Sherpa villages en route, including Namche Bazaar, a colorful place with a surprisingly large amount to do (including a bakery and English language bookstore). Pangboche, a few days further on, is home to a unique Buddhist monestary.
Trekking in the Khumba region of Nepal is not for the unfit. Even though the mountains tower thousands of feet above the trail, trekkers are still exposed to a risk of altitude sickness, because they are traveling at around 10,000 feet above sea level. Still, going slowly, and stopping along the way to acclimatize to the altitude, should reduce your discomfort.
If trekking all the way to everest base camp, it is best to hire a guide.
