The devastating effects of the December 2004 Tsunami are still being felt in many communities in South and Southeast Asia. Phuket, Thailand, a spot where hundreds of tourists perished during the disaster, has bounced back rather quickly. Even a plane crash last year has not dissuaded tourists from coming to the island paradise.
I'm sure everyone is glad to see Phuket back in the tourist game. Everyone, that is, except Hua Hin.
The tourist boom in Hua Hin hit full force in 2005. Why? It is a relatively new resort area. It's a mere three hours from Bangkok via train. It's low key and, for the most part, family friendly. And it boasts a beautiful beach.
These days, due to excessive building, Hua Hin's hoteliers are in competition with each other, and, now that Phuket is back on line, with Thailand's other, better known destinations.
Who benefits from this competition? Visitors, of course.
Rates are likely to fall, especially during low season (Northern Hemisphere's spring and summer). A room that might cost the equivalent of US$300, might see its price slashed in half...or more.
Hua Hin is also looking into hosting events like a film festival, a golf tournament, etc. Visitors will then have another reason to visit this convenient and clean resort town.
