The U.P.
Filed in archive Hidden Gems on August 9, 2007
The closest thing to a city in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (The U.P) is Marquette. The cozy college town of 20,000 is home to Northern Michigan University. It is the perfect place to use as a base for exploring the sights of the U.P.
Sugarloaf Mountain is known for the views of Lake Superior it provides. From the topmost observation deck, it is possible to see Presque Isle, which sits just off the coast. The island is home to parks, trails, and picnic pavilions. Presque Isle can be reached via road.
Lake Superior is an impressive body of water. Equally impressive are the massive ships that navigate the waters near Marquette. It is worth it to visit Marquette simply to spend a day watching the lake.
There are numerous "college town" type eateries in Marquette serving sandwiches, pizza, and "pub grub." The campus of Northern Michigan University is also a nice place for a stroll.
