The Best Indian City You've Never Heard Of

Even many historians are unaware of the story of Pondicherry. The former French colony sits on India's Southeast coastline. Its colonial history is a bit more troubled than that of Goa or Mumbai. In fact, since it was first seized by ambitious French colonists seeking a port between their lands in Africa and Indochina, Pondicherry has not had much success.

Until now. This city of one million has remade its image. Its waterfront is a South Asian version of the French Riviera, with the snootiness of the original replaced with a welcoming laid back vibe common in coastal Indian resort towns. Many old colonial buildings have been restored, and the tree-lined avenues offer a sense of tranquility. At least in the Old Quarter near the sea, this peace is not an illusion. That's a big plus for tourists needing a break from the overcrowded and sometimes overwhelming cities of India.

Pondicherry boasts plenty of cafes, internet shops, and restaurants. Accommodations might seem pricey, especially along the water, but, this is still India, and expensive is a relative term.
