During South Africa's turbulent past, Soweto, the gigantic suburb of Johannesburg was stricken with poverty and oppression. As the video below shows, things are changing for the city of nearly four million.
Tour companies are starting to recognize that Soweto is a viable tourist destination. It has a remarkably colorful culture and is historically significant for its role in the fight against apartheid. Famous leaders like nelson mandela called Soweto home.

The history of widespread crime is a turn off for many travelers. Despite the fact that Soweto is doing better than ever economically, it is still probably best to join a tour rather than trying to go it alone in Soweto. The Johannesburg city website provides a list of reputable guides.
