Sightseeing in Dubai
For casual tourists, the Middle East is usually not even considered an option for a getaway. Unfortunately, conflict and anti-western sentiment in the region usually makes the news. Though violent action and speech might not be the norm, such reports are often enough to dissuade even more adventurous travelers.

Enter Dubai. The modern desert city in the United Arab Emirates boasts one of Arabian Peninsula's more liberal societies. The infrastructure and amenities are among the best in the world.

Dubai has a history as a commercial center. Long, thin dhows carried goods to the port from points east and west. Today, malls like Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre offer some of the world's best shopping experiences. More traditional places like Gold souk offer a chance to window-shop. Dubai Museum offers some information about the history of the area's societies and has a replica of traditional souk (market).

Dubai has some of the world's most expensive hotels and resorts. There are many reasonable hotels as well, but you'll be hard pressed to find a cheap place to lay your head.

Still, Dubai is a great place to start for travelers who might be apprehensive about visiting the Middle East.
