Is the reign of the backpacker over in Thailand? Probably not yet. But the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is seeking to alter Thailand's image from budget travelers' paradise to high-end destination.
Thailand has always had quality. Hotels like the Peninsula and Royal orchid Sheraton offer a classic luxury experience, while attractions like river cruises, dinner theaters, and gem retailers have always been in place. According to TAT, the only thing missing is the PR. Thailand is making a concerted effort to market itself to travelers in search of a bit of luxury.
It might be worth keeping an eye The Kingdom, as it appears special promotional deals are part of TAT's strategy:
Tap niche tourist markets such as golfers, honeymooners, marine tourism enthusiasts, spa and wellness aficionados, corporate travelers and seniors by launching specific promotional campaigns on a regular basis.
What many people don't know is that Thailand's low season (May- September) is the best time to find the best prices on accommodations and experiences. While such deals don't mean that Khao San Road's backpacker set are going to line up to check in to The Peninsula, it does take some of the sting off a top of the line room's sticker price.
Also due for some serious promotional activity: trekking haven Chiang Mai, in Thailand's northern mountains, and many of the lesser known islands in the sun swept south.
