Neighborhoods
by Josh Lew on September 1, 2007

The Nordeast, as Minneapolis residents call it, is seeing a renaissance of sorts. Once a gritty residential area, Northeast Minneapolis now enjoys a fresh atmosphere. The arts and eating scenes seem to gain ever-increasing vitality. Many restaurants in Nordeast are known for their "neighborhood feel."
The Eastern European and Middle Eastern feel that used to characterize the area is still represented in places like Kramarczuk's Deli and Holy Land Restaurant.
Drinking beer from a large glass boot and sampling snuff is possible at the wild and fun Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit German restaurant.
It was the art scene that gave Nordeast a boost. 13th Avenue N. around University Ave is home to some of the area's best art galleries. Jackson Street's Northup/King building also houses numerous galleries.
Last but not least, the world famous Nye's Polonaise Room is located in Nordeast. The bar was recently voted best bar in America by a major magazine.
