Monaco on a Budget: Possible?
Filed in archive Budget Travel on September 16, 2007

Admit it. You have imagined yourself in Monaco, slinking into the high roller's room at a casino, just like a character in a James Bond movie. However, you don't have the financial backing of MI-6 to fund your baccarat playing. Yes, Monaco is not a cheap place. It's status as a tax haven makes it an attraction for the rich. However, there are ways to enjoy the atmosphere of this Mediterranean nation without having to rob a bank or sell a kidney.
The architecture in Monaco is a big attraction. The interiors of some of the more upscale buildings like the Casino de Paris borders on ridiculous in its opulence. It is easy to walk around Monte Carlo, and possible to rent bicycles or motor scooters for a homemade sightseeing tour of the fab buildings.
Condamine Market gives off a bit of an "Old World" vibe. The local people are friendly and you can expect to bargain before purchasing. This is definitely a surprising and refreshing place to visit.
There are simple cafes on the seafront serving good eats at reasonable prices. Hotels in Monaco are expensive. Coming during the off-season (winter) will get you more reasonable rates (under $50). Or, consider basing yourself in Nice, France, under an hour away via bus or train.
Still on the James Bond fantasy? Well, there is an entrance fee to many of Monte Carlo's casinos (20 Euros) and a suit and tie is required for males. If that doesn't seem like too steep a price to pay, by all means, go for it, 007.
