Hanoi's Scenic Lake
Hoan Kiem Lake in Ha Noi, Viet Nam is a sublime place. After the in-your-face urban experiences of Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City (A.K.A. Sai Gon), Ha Noi seems almost quaint. The atmosphere seems closer to a city in China than one in the southern portions of Vietnam. While tourist destinations like The War Museum and Uncle Ho's Mausoleum are probably on the itinerary of most travelers, a trip around Hoan Kiem is a must. The walking is best made in morning, when there is a slight mist on the lake and the air is cool. There are a few hawkers (don't change your money with the money changers here) and kids selling postcards, it is mostly a peaceful trip. The trees create a bit of a buffer between the walkway and the morning rush hour. The good, French inspired bakeries and breakfast spots offer a way to sprinkle some refreshment into the morning.

Early (I mean early-early, pre-sunrise), it seems like Hanoi's entire over-sixty population is practicing Tai-Chi along the shore.

Ha Noi has a unique atmosphere. It is totally different than anywhere else in Viet Nam. Hoan Kiem Lake is a great place to experience this first-hand.
