There seems to be one controversy after another when it comes to censorship in China. Short of a trip to The Middle Kingdom, the best way to get in touch with the real China is to head for one of the online video sites. One of the best websites covering Chinese current eventslinks is danwei.org. They also produce are series of video spots like this one about Beijing:

Yes, finding videos like this one, that is produced with a reasonable amount of skill, is difficult. Still, there is a wealth of stuff out there worth a look. Sites like danwei are a good start for people wanting to get a feel for China.
