Finding Adventure in American Samoa

Finding Adventure in American Samoa

American Samoa is not known as a particularly attractive tourist destination. Other South Pacific Islands generally hog the limelight. However, islands' leadership and th U.S. congress have worked to reserve some of the most pristine areas for a National Park. The seashore, mountainous tropical forests, and coral reefs are an eco-tourists dream. Lata Mountain, on the island of Ta'u is a prime hiking spot, while the reefs off the island of Ofu offer some of the best snorkeling south of Hawaii.

So why aren't people flocking to American Samoa?

It's mighty hard to get there. There are flights from Australia, New Zealand, and several other island nations, but travelers in the western hemisphere will have to fly through Hawaii, making for an expensive trip. It can also be difficult once you get to the islands (the Pago Pago Airport is the only international airport). You'll have to get as close as you can, then wing it. Flights to the national park are irregular, and boats cannot be arranged prior to arrival. It is definitely a case of "getting there is half the adventure."

The trails in the park are well marked and have some absolutely stunning scenery. You'll have to camp, unless you plan ahead and take advantage of the homestay program. Local families offer lodging to visitors and give them a chance to experience local culture and food firsthand.

American Samoa might not offer the most straightforward vacation, but it promises to be a unique adventure.
