Exploring Namibia
Filed in archive Hidden Gems by Josh Lew on January 10, 2008

Amongst travelers, little is known about Namibia. The sparsely populated nation in Southern Africa is dominated by the desert, dry grasslands, and a rugged coastline. So why is it a good place to visit?
Simplicity, value, and safety. Kenya, the safari capital of Africa is currently experiencing unrest and things appear to be getting worse rather than better. So adventure seekers have been looking south. South Africa's famous game preserves offer a great experience, but the unspoiled beauty and lack of crowds make Namibia an attractive alternative. Catching a glimpse of rhinos, zebra, and cheetahs
at Etosha National Park is just one of the adventures Namibia offers. Desert excursions, rock climbing trips, and even hot air balloon tours are available. All this in a country that is arguably one of the safest and most stable in Africa. Tours are generally well run, though the budget end will still run over $100 per day. The sheer lack of population might be an attraction to those who want to get away from it all, but it makes independent travel more difficult (though not impossible). You can't simply wander off without a plan and see who you run into. The chances that you will run into no one are quite high.
Namibia might be the best place in Africa to visit. The tourism infrastructure is one of the continents best and the sights and experiences might lead on to believe that Namibia won't stay a hidden gem for long.
