Escaping from Kathmandu

Escaping from Kathmandu

Unless you are a serious Mountain Climber, you'll come to Kathmandu for the history and exoticism that surround one of the world's oldest cities. Yes, the history is all there, you just have to trudge down to Durbar Square in the center of the city. Also there amidst the aged temples and colorful textile markets, is the downside of Kathmandu. The air is extremely polluted, the crowds themselves are difficult to pick your way through and the touts offering to guide you or provide other services need to hear "no" 27 times before they leave you alone.

Don't get me wrong. Kathmandu is one of the most colorful and unique places on earth. But, after a few days, you'll probably want to get away.

That's where Nagarkot comes in. The small city is perched on top of the hills of Kathmandu Valley. A mere 30km from Kathmandu, but it might as well be 300km. The pristine alpine forests surrounding Nagarkot are the perfect frame for views of the Himalayas. The town is considered a resort mecca. Uniquely though, most of the accommodation are quite cheap (in price). A mid-range hotel room ($40-$50 US) will give you a direct view of the mountains.

There are also trails around the area, some of which lead to more spectacular views. Best of all, Nagarkot has a laid back atmosphere that stands in direct contrast to Kathmandu. So even without all the scenery, it would still be an attractive destination.
