East-side Renaissance
Filed in archive Hidden Gems by Josh Lew on August 16, 2007

no-go land, the poverty and violence of the district's past are on the wane. Perhaps it is merely that East L.A. has gained some positive P.R. It is true that the place was often the scene of violence, and was a haven for drug users and gangs. Yet, the colorful street life and numerous ethnic enclaves have always been present. The opening of trendy new cafes and bars only adds to the areas color; it does not define it. Those living in East L.A. might notice the rising prices of rent and real estate. To visitors, this area's color is not more accessible than ever.
