Hidden Gems
by Josh Lew on December 15, 2007

According to the International Herald Tribune, Laos is going to be one of the hottest destinations of the next year. I pointed out the attractions of Laos a couple of months ago on this site (*Here, I pause to reach over my shoulder and pat myself on the back*). It's probably one of the least visited places in Southeast Asia, but definitely not the least attractive.
Laos has always been an attractive destination. At once quaint, quiet, historic, and mysterious. Why is it getting press now? Laos is, apparently, crossing the threshold of having enough upscale inns and eateries to get noticed.
What else does it have? Some of the best ambiance in all of Southeast Asia, enhanced by some of the oldest Buddhist temples, which are impressive for their structure and/or spirituality (your choice).
Mostly, though, it's the laid back Laotian people that give the country its charm. The cosmopolitan airs of Bangkok or the aggressiveness of Ho Chi Minh city are refreshingly absent from the population of Laos' cities (Luang Prabang, Vientiane). Travelers can take their time. Cities are pedestrian and bicycle friendly.
Laos has always been there and always been an attractive destination. The press is just a little late for the party.
