When people think of Carnival, they think of Brazil. Rio's early February extravaganza beats all when it comes to spectacle and size. With all the press it gets, one might think that Brazil is the only place that holds such a celebration.
However, Brazil is not the only place to experience carnival. Take Trinidad and Tobago, for example. The Caribbean nation has a history of celebrating Fat Tuesday that goes back as far as Brazil's. Though not quite as spectacular in scale, Trinidad's fete could not be mistaken for anything other than what it is, a huge party where everyone is invited to participate. It is decidedly more relaxed than Rio's main events, the emphasis on fun rather than production value.
Music and parties get underway at least a month before the actual event. Parties range from exclusive and luxurious to down-to-earth. There are plenty of concerts and dances.
There are parades with marching band, costumed dancers. You can even join in with them, depending on the size of your pocket book and the level of comfort you have in your body. Some neighborhood parades, like the one above, are low-key and boast a bit more clothing than other parades.
There is no need to look for festivities, as Trinidad's version of carnival happens everywhere. You won't be able to escape the music and dancing until things shut down after the party is over.
