Canada's Rugged Island Destination
Filed in archive Hidden Gems by Josh Lew on December 09, 2007

Prince Edward Island is a rugged piece of land off of Canada's eastern coastline. It is known for its shell-fish and for being the setting of L.M. Montgomery's famous Anne of Green Gables novels. Sure, the windswept coasts and harsh Canadian winters don't sound too inviting, but the sheer natural beauty makes P.E.I. and attractive place to visit, especially during the summer months.
The rural farmlands and small towns
of the island offer a feeling of "stepping back in time." This is not the cosmopolitan world of Canada's eastern metropolises.
Malpeque Harbor is the place to find the freshest oysters before they even begin their journey to fine dining establishments along the Atlantic coast of Canada and the US.
Of course, anything that has to do with the famed Anne of Green Gables novels is a hit with tourists. There are even some package tours available that will take you to replicas of settings from the story.
Because tourism is a major industry on Price Edward Island, prices are not always cheap. It might be best to find a bed and breakfast, though many are booked solid during the high-season. Using the city of Charlottetown as a base for exploring the island is not a bad idea, especially since food and accommodations are convenient.
