Beirut Plugs In

Because of the events of the past thirty years, Beirut has become known for its violence rather than its history as the most important city in the Middle East. Prior to the bloody civil war (which broke out in 1975), Beirut was known as the intellectual and cultural capital of the Arab world. In 1989, the war ended, but many would argue, Beirut never returned to its pre-war status. Dubai is currently known as the commercial and cultural center of the modern Middle East.

Beirut was again harmed by conflict when Israel lashed out against extremists based in the southern suburbs of the city. Reasonable stability has returned and the street side cafes and bustling souks are in full swing. Beirut's blend of French, Mediterranean, and Arab architecture makes a stroll through the streets worthwhile.

Those not familiar with the city might not know that Beirut is one of the most popular stops for world famous DJs. There is also a deep pool of local talent.

The party scene in Beirut might surprise lots of people. Those who are familiar with the city's past will tell you that, at least in spirit, the party never stopped.
