A Quiet Tropical Island
Filed in archive Islands by Josh Lew on March 17, 2008
The sea off Thailand's southern coast is littered with islands. Many have attractive weather, fine-grained sand beaches, tropical fruit trees, and a laid back aura that defines the best tropical island getaway spots. However, only a few of these islands have booming tourist industries. With so much shoreline unmarred by resorts, garbage-strewn beaches, and masses of tan-lined tourists, Thailand's next island hotspot could be anywhere.

A Quiet Tropical Island

Take Koh Lanta, for example. This island is adjacent to heavily visited Krabi. However, it is relatively unspoiled in comparison. There are no direct flights to Lanta, but the ferry ride from Krabi is no less than pleasant. The crowds are absent along Lanta's clean beaches. The impossibly Green Mountains stretch up from the beach. Perhaps because of the lack of tourists, wildlife thrives here. You'll come into contact with many a feathered local just by sitting on sand outside your bungalow.

Koh Lanta has one major resort and many bungalow style guest houses. Many are family run. The raucous nightlife of some of Thailand's other islands cannot be found on Lanta, but if you are looking for a quiet, serene getaway, it might be worth a look.
